The Goring Belgravia, central London, England

It is Located at across the road from Buckingham Palace. The hotel has the great advantage of a huge private garden, surrounded by flower borders and shrubbery, with a central lawn on which croquet is played in the summer months.

Style was never the Goring’s strong point, though it always had character and humour (self-mocking caricatures; Noel Coward singing if you are put on hold; life-sized sheep in bedrooms and plastic ducks in bathrooms; a house magazine called The Trumpeter that’s full of fun). To mark its 100th anniversary, it began a programme of stylish redecoration that has just finished with the unveiling of its ravishing new Front Hall, clad with hand-painted wallpaper of exotic animals (some caricatures of staff and owners) in a romantic English landscape. The Bar & Lounge, by Tim Gosling, is richly decorated in reds, yellows and gold.

Chiltern Firehouse Marylebone, central London, England

central London

Housed in a fire station dating from 1887, the building has huge charm. The street on which Chiltern Firehouse stands has been recently regenerated street and is now lined with interesting shops. Happily the traditional barber’s shop and the newsagent opposite have not been swept away, thanks to the help of Chiltern Firehouse owner André Balazs, also known for the Mercer and Château Marmont.

The original façade has been restored and the former ladder shed is now the guest lobby; the engine house holds the restaurant, with bedrooms above; and the newly constructed extension in between holds the horseshoe-shaped bar and a courtyard for outdoor seating. The whole is compact, but it works. The comfort and happiness of the guests have been given impressive thought and you feel it the moment you are ushered in by doormen straight from central casting (head doorman Matt McClure really is also an actor). The interiors, by Paris-based Studio KO, are timeless, homely, stylish, vintage and glamorous.

Beaverbrook Town House chelsea, central London, England

Spot on for leisure travellers. While it’s just a stroll away from Harrods and the many designer shops of Sloane Street, it also offers that rare thing of a tennis court and leafy gardens in central London with its key to the private, Grade II-listed Cadogan Place Gardens. The nearest tube station, Sloane Square, is a few minutes’ walk away, whilst Heathrow and Gatwick airports are easily accessible from here by taxi or train.

Uplifting, vibrant interiors by Sir Frank Lowe and designer Nicola Harding make for the warmest of welcomes in an informal atmosphere. British antiques jostle with vintage Japanese prints; lampshades by Rosi de Ruig are illuminated by decorative lighting from Vaughan Designs; inviting sofas and chairs are covered with cushions by Penny Worrall.

Brown’s Hotel Mayfair, London, England

The hotel’s porters – in top hats, naturally – can hail a cab at a moment’s notice, not that you’ll need it: Brown’s is a well-heeled hop from Bond Street and Regent Street, with Green Park (the nearest Tube station) just a five-minute walk away.

Leisure facilities, too, are very impressive – with a three-room spa, large fitness suite (which can be booked for private use), and personal trainers available on request. Also, ask for a running map of the local area, for routes through Green Park and more. The hotel has also partnered with Pashley Cycles for its reopening and now offers two bespoke branded bikes for guest use, along with a cycle safari itinerary.
